The Giacomo Smith Quartet
Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, W1D 4HT , [Venue Details]Acclaimed clarinettist, saxophonist, composer and producer Giacomo Smith brings his new quartet Upstairs at Ronnie's for the London launch of Artfullee, a striking new album of original music - his first foray into the straight-ahead jazz quartet.
Best known as the founder and bandleader of Kansas Smitty's, Smith has built an international reputation for his deep understanding of the jazz tradition and his ability to reimagine it through a contemporary lens.
Following the recording sessions for Artfullee in September 2025, six original compositions were taught to the band entirely by ear rather than written down, allowing the music to evolve organically through performance and collective instinct. The result is an atmospheric and melodically open set that places mood, interaction and spontaneity at its centre.
Featuring Smith on clarinet, bass clarinet, soprano and alto saxophone, the quartet draws on a shared musical language developed through close collaboration. Joining him are Tom Ward on piano, Tom Farmer on bass and Shane Forbes on drums.
Born in Italy and raised in the United States, Smith has performed with artists including Wynton Marsalis, Jamie Cullum, Biréli Lagrène, China Moses, Joe Lovano, Guy Barker and Julian Bliss. As a producer, he has worked on recordings by Jamie Cullum, Zara McFarlane, Jas Kayser, Damian Lewis and Joe Stilgoe, and is also a respected educator at the Royal Academy of Music.
